Heated Clothing for Camping and Campervans: Warm Without Mains

Heated clothing for camping and campervans

Heated clothing for camping keeps you warm where a campsite is coldest: sitting still outside after dark. A heated vest runs on a power bank, so it works at the tent, under the awning and in the campervan, with or without mains.

When the campsite gets cold

Evenings at the tent or awning

The sun goes down and the temperature follows. You sit still with a drink, so you make little heat. A heated vest under your jacket keeps the evening going.

Early mornings

The first coffee outside, with dew on the grass. Heat at the press of a button beats waiting for the sun.

Spring and autumn

Quiet sites come with cold nights. Three heat levels cover a mild afternoon and a chilly evening in one layer.

Winter camping

In frost, heating is an extra on top of good layers, not a replacement for them. Wear the vest over a base layer and under a windproof jacket.

Festival nights

Warm by day, cold at two in the morning. A vest and a power bank weigh little and fit in a day bag.

In the campervan

Warm yourself in the morning without heating the whole van. Charge the power bank while you drive.

Power without mains

Heated clothing runs on a power bank, so you do not need an electric hook-up.

  • One evening: a 10,000 mAh power bank keeps a vest warm for about 3–6 hours.
  • A weekend: a 20,000 mAh power bank gives about 6–12 hours. That is two to four evenings of three hours.
  • Charging on the road: a power bank charges from a USB port in the car or the campervan. Plug it in while you drive.
  • Your phone too: both Gløde power banks can charge a phone. That costs warming time, so plan for it.
  • Cold nights: batteries deliver less in the cold. Keep the power bank in an inner pocket, and inside the tent or van overnight.
  • Before bed: switch the heating off and unplug the power bank. Heated clothing is for the evening outside, not for the night.

What to pack

A vest for under your jacket, a fleece for round the tent and enough power for the weekend.

Heated camping chairs

Gløde does not sell heated camping chairs. This is an explanation of the type, not a test.

A heated camping chair is a folding chair with heating in the seat and often in the back as well, usually powered by a battery pack or a USB power bank. It warms the side of you that a vest does not reach.

  • Battery: check whether a battery is in the box, and which plug the chair needs.
  • Where it heats: seat only, or seat and back.
  • Pack size and weight: they matter in a small car.
  • The alternative: a separate heated seat cushion works on any chair you already own.

And in summer

The same power bank is useful in July. A rechargeable fan moves air in the tent or under the awning without mains. See portable fans compared.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use heated clothing on a pitch without electricity?

Yes. Heated clothing runs on a power bank, so you do not need an electric hook-up. Charge the power bank at home, in the car or in the campervan.

How long does a power bank last on a camping weekend?

On a vest, a 10,000 mAh power bank gives about 3–6 hours of warmth and a 20,000 mAh one about 6–12 hours, depending on the heat level. For a weekend of cold evenings, take the large one or two small ones.

Can I charge the power bank in my car or campervan?

Yes. A power bank charges from a USB port, so you can plug it in while you drive. Keep it out of direct sun and out of the rain.

Does Gløde sell heated camping chairs?

No, not at the moment. Leave your email in the form on this page and we will send you one message if we launch one.
