Warm dog, warm owner.
In short: a self-warming dog bed with a reflective layer is the simplest heated dog bed: no cable, no settings, nothing to switch off. A heated dog mat on low-voltage mains power or USB gives more warmth, but needs a thermostat, a chew-resistant cable and supervision. A dog coat keeps short-haired dogs comfortable on winter walks. In summer, a cooling mat with gel or water gives your dog a cool spot. And for you on those long winter walks: a heated vest and heated gloves.

Heated dog beds and mats compared
| Type | Power | Warmth | Where | Good to know |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Self-warming bed or mat | None; reflects your dog's own body heat | Mild | Indoors, crate, car | No cable to chew; fine to leave while you are out |
| Heated dog mat, mains (low voltage) | Wall socket via adapter | Steady | Indoors, kennel, utility room | Look for a thermostat and a chew-resistant or wrapped cable |
| USB or battery dog mat | 5 V power bank or USB adapter | Mild to medium | Car, camping, dog shows | Limited runtime; cable still needs protecting |
| Microwavable heat pad | Heated in the microwave | Warm, then cools off over hours | Under a blanket in the bed | Follow the heating instructions exactly |
| Dog coat | None | Insulation and rain protection | On walks | Check fit at chest and neck; harness opening if needed |
Type by type
Self-warming dog bed
A layer of insulation or reflective material bounces your dog's own body heat back. There is nothing to plug in and nothing to overheat. It is a good choice for dogs that chew, for puppies and for nights when nobody is around. The warmth is milder than an electric mat, and it only works when your dog lies on it.
Heated dog mat on mains power
Electric pads made for pets usually run on low voltage and warm to a moderate temperature. Many have a thermostat that responds to your dog's weight or keeps the surface at a set temperature. They suit a draughty kennel or a cold utility room. Never use a heating pad made for people; pet pads are designed for this use.
USB or battery dog mat
Smaller mats that run on a power bank. Handy in the car on the way to a winter walk, at a campsite or at a dog show. Runtime is limited, and the warmth is milder than a mains mat.
Dog coats
Short-haired, small and slim dogs often feel the cold sooner on winter walks. A coat with a fleece lining keeps them comfortable, a waterproof outer layer keeps rain off. Fit matters: it should cover the back without pinching at the chest or legs. Choose one with an opening for the harness if you walk with one. Heated dog coats exist too, but a well-fitting normal coat covers most needs.
Safety basics for heated dog products
- Thermostat and auto shut-off. Choose a mat that limits its own temperature.
- Protect the cable. A chew-resistant or wrapped cable, kept out of reach. For dogs that chew, choose a self-warming bed.
- Never unattended with mains devices, unless the manufacturer explicitly allows it. Unplug the mat when you go out or go to bed.
- Puppies only under supervision. They chew and cannot always move away from heat.
- Room to move away. Cover only part of the bed or crate, so your dog can choose a cooler spot.
- Feel it yourself. If the surface feels too warm on your palm, it is too warm for your dog.

Summer: cooling mats compared
The same dog that seeks warmth in January looks for a cool floor in July. Cooling mats give that cool spot.
| Type | How it works | Cool for | Good to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gel mat (pressure-activated) | Gel absorbs body heat as soon as your dog lies on it | Often an hour or a few hours, then needs a rest off-body | No fridge or power needed; not for dogs that chew |
| Water-filled mat | Water absorbs heat slowly | Longer, but feels less cold | Heavier; can leak if punctured |
| Raised mesh bed | Air flows under your dog | As long as there is airflow | Durable; works well in shade |
A cooling mat is a comfort item. It does not replace shade, fresh water and walking in the cooler hours of the day.
And you? Staying warm on winter walks
Your dog gets to run. You mostly stand still: at the field, waiting at the gate, on the same loop in the dark. That is when the cold gets in. Three things help.
Warm your core
A heated vest under your coat keeps your body warm while you stand or stroll. Gløde vests have three heat levels up to 50 °C and come with a power bank. See our heated vest comparison to choose one.
Warm hands, even with a lead
A lead, poo bags and a ball thrower mean your hands are out of your pockets. Heated gloves with a good grip keep them warm. Wrist straps help when you take a glove off to grab a treat. More in our guide to the best heated gloves.
Enough power for the long loop
A 10,000 mAh power bank gives around 3–6 hours of warmth on a Gløde vest, more than enough for morning and evening walks. For longer days, read our guide to the best power bank for heated clothing.
What Gløde offers today
No dog beds. We keep the person at the other end of the lead warm.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best heated dog bed?
It depends on your dog and your home. A self-warming bed is the simplest and can be left unattended. A heated dog mat with a thermostat and a chew-resistant cable gives more warmth, but is best used under supervision.
Are heated dog beds safe?
Products made for pets usually run on low voltage and limit their temperature. Choose a thermostat or auto shut-off, protect the cable, leave room for your dog to move off the heat, and do not leave mains devices on unattended unless the manufacturer allows it.
What is a self-warming dog bed?
A bed with an insulating or reflective layer that sends your dog's own body heat back. It needs no power and does not overheat, but the warmth is milder than an electric mat.
Can I use a human heating pad for my dog?
That is not recommended. Pet heating pads are designed for pets, usually on low voltage with a limited temperature. A heating pad for people can get too warm.
Does my dog need a coat in winter?
Many short-haired, small or slim dogs feel the cold sooner and are more comfortable in a coat on cold, wet walks. Dogs with a thick coat often do not need one. If in doubt, ask your vet.
How does a dog cooling mat work?
A gel mat absorbs body heat as soon as your dog lies on it and feels cool for a while before it needs a rest. A water-filled mat absorbs heat more slowly and stays cool for longer. Neither needs power.
